September is said to be the “doorway to autumn’s poetry.”We don’t know who said it, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to celebrate it on this week’s Dress Circle (9/7 7:00 p.m.) as we look songs from some of the shows that opened this month. We’re going to be covering 124 years of Broadway history this month.
We’re beginning in 1897 with a long-forgotten show entitled “The Belle of New York” which has very little to do with the Fred Astaire film. This one is about a Salvation Army worker who reforms a notorious spendthrift. For this, we have a “Vocal Gems from…” recording from the early 20th century featuring the Columbia Light Opera Chorus.
Our most recent musical is “Waitress” once again. The “Covid reopening” happened in September of 2021, and we haven’t had a musical opening on Broadway since.
We’ve tried to focus on bringing you songs from some of the lesser-known works like “Alma, Where Do You Live?” from 1910 and “Hot September,” but we’ve also got some audience favorites like a “Gypsy” revival starring Angela Lansbury, a revival of Sondheim’s “Follies,” and the wonderfully satirical “Urinetown.”
We’ve also got a gorgeous recreation of a Jerome Kern / Oscar Hammerstein song from “Sweet Adeline” and the way it sounded from the original score thanks to John McGlinn. We’ve scheduled “Some Girl Is on Your Mind” for near the end of the hour, and it’s well worth the wait.
Join us for another happy hour that’s filled with some musical history and a few unfamiliar works this Sunday.
