The Dress Circle: Women Composers for Women's History Month

There are many celebrations in the month of March such as National Noodle Month, National Flour Month, and National Frozen Food Month. However, we like to celebrate another aspect of March as National Women’s History Month. With that said, this week’s Dress Circle (3/15 7:00 p.m.) is dedicated to fourteen of the women who have composed scores for some on and off-Broadway musicals.

Our earliest composer is Kay Swift who was a good friend of George and Ira Gershwin and who was the first woman to compose the music for a popular Broadway musical: “Fine and Dandy” which she wrote with her then husband, James Paul Warburg, who wrote lyrics for her songs under the name Paul James. We’re also celebrating Lisa Lambert who is the first woman to win a Tony Award for composition for the musical “The Drowsy Chaperone” which she co-wrote with Greg Morrison.

Other composers include Mary Rodgers (daughter of Richard Rodgers and mother of Adam Guettel), Anais Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Mary Murfitt, Lynn Ahrens, Carol Hall, Micki Grant, and more.

We’ll turn to songs written for Broadway, off-Broadway, and television with two including performances by their authors.

Join us for another happy hour of songs from the musicals by some extremely talented women composers.
