We’re looking to just a few of the shows that opened on Broadway this month for this week’s Dress Circle (10/4 7:00 p.m.) and a collection of overtures, preludes, and opening numbers.
Our earliest musical is Victor Herbert’s “Babes in Toyland” which premiered in 1903. We’re fortunate to have a lengthy prelude that has long been forgotten. Jump ahead 122 years to the second revival of “Ragtime” by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty which is currently the last musical to open on Broadway. We have the prologue and opening number/title song from this revival.
We’re also turning to numbers by George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Burton Lane, Jerome Kern, and Irving Berlin to fill out our time together.
We hope you’ll tune in this Sunday for some charming music and a few pieces that may be unfamiliar. They’re all wonderful and are sure to offer up a pleasant hour of listening.
