November has arrived with all of its natural beauty and human angst, but we’re going to focus on some beauty on this week’s Dress Circle (11/1 7:00 p.m.) as we continue with overtures and opening numbers from a selection of the musicals that opened this month.
We’re beginning in 1844 with the opening of the premier production of “The Bohemian Girl” by Balfe and Bunn. After that, we’ll be jumping an amazing 182 years to the first Broadway outing of “The Fantasticks” by Schmidt and Jones in a limited engagement that has “reimagined” (We hate that word.) the musicals as a vehicle for “Matt and Lewis” and the machinations of their Mothers, Bessie May and Mildred. Although we don’t have any music from this production yet, we’re welcoming it with the overture from the original off-Broadway production that ran for 42 years!
We’ve also programmed overtures from the Gershwins’ “Oh, Kay!,” as well as Herbert’s “Naughty Marietta.”
Our opening numbers and scene-setting musical sequences come from Kander and Ebb’s “Zorba” and “Cabaret,” Loesser’s “Guys and Dolls,” Wright, Forrest, and Yeston’s “Grand Hotel,” and Coleman and Leigh’s “Little Me.”
We’ve done our best to offer you another hour featuring a variety of gorgeous music and excellent performances, and we hope you’ll join us this Sunday.
