The Sunday Opera: Bizet's "Carmen" from the Los Angeles Opera

We’re continuing with productions from the Los Angeles Opera on this week’s Sunday Opera (10/6 3:00 p.m.) with George Bizet’s “Carmen.”  Ana Maria Martinez won accolades for her work in the title role, and she’s joined by Brandon Jovanovich as the obsessed Don Jose, Amanda Woodbury as the faithful Micaela, and Alexander Vinogradov as the flashy Escamillo.  Rounding out the cast are Liv Redpath and Kelly O’Connor as Frasquita and Mercedes, Brian Michael Moore as Le Remendado, and Theo Hoffman as Dancaire.  James Conlon conducts.

After the opera, join host Michael Kownacky for a rarity: a cantata written by an eighteen-year-old Bizet which won him the Prix de Rome and was forgotten after one performance.  The cantata is titled “Clovis et Clotilde” and features solo work by Katarina Jovanovic, Philippe Do, and Mark Schnaible.  We’ll close the afternoon with Bizet’s “Jeux d’enfants” performed by pianists Ulla Schuback and Jan Bulow.

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
