Our final performance from Vienna will be featured on this week’s Sunday Opera (6/14 3:00 p.m.) as we go to the Vienna State Opera’s production of Richard Strauss’ “Elektra.” In this revenge tragedy, Elektra and her brother Orestes avenge the murder of their father, Agamemnon, at the hands of their mother Clytemnestra and Clytemnestra’s lover, Aegisthus. The performers from this 2019 production include Christine Goerke as Elektra, Michael Volle as Orestes, Waltraud Meier as Clytemnestra, and Norbert Ernst as Aegisthus.
Rounding out the cast are Simone Schneider as Elektra’s sister Chrysothemis, Siminia Ivan as Clytemnestra’s confidant, and Marcus Pelz as Orestes’ tutor. Semyon Bychkov conducts. Join host Michael Kownacky after the opera for more music of Strauss including three tone poems: two “Dons” “Don Juan” and “Don Quixote” as well as his last and longest, “Ein Heldenleben” (“A Hero’s Life”). We’ll conclude the afternoon with a wonderfully percussive live performance of the infamous “Dance of the Seven Veils” from “Solome.”
