The Dress Circle: "Shall We Dance?" - Dances from Stage and Screen Musicals

This week’s Dress Circle (9/22 7:00 p.m.) asks the musical question, “Shall we dance?” with dances from the scores of stage and screen musicals.  Of course, we’ll be going to the original cast of “The King and I” for our “title song,” but we’ll also be turning to dances created for the stage through songs like “A New Fangled Tango,” “The Heaven Hop,” “The Mu Cha Cha”, “The Spanish Panic,” and “The Uncle Sam Rag.”  We’ll also sample some film dances including “The Shorty George,” “The Continental,” “The Carioca,” “The Tapioca,” and one of our favorites, “The Yam.”

Whether real dances that were eventually done in dancehalls outside of the musical or just those made up for a giggle, we’ve probably got the perfect dance for you on this week’s program.  Just remember, “The Spanish Panic” is the same as “The Magic Step,” only forwards!

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
