We tend to have tunnel vision when it comes to musicals, thinking mainly of Broadway being the center of all action, but on this week’s Dress Circle (9/20 7:00 p.m.), we’ll remedy that with a look at the lyrics of a major force in the German-language musical scene, Michael Kunze. His catalogue is truly impressive as he has translated many of the blockbuster musicals that have transferred to Germany, musicals such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Les Miserables,” “Wicked,” “Cats,” and “Sunset Boulevard.”
He has also written the book and lyrics for shows with which we aren’t that familiar such as the hit “Elisabeth” as well as the ill-fated “Tanz der Vampire.” which suffered from some rather heavy-handed medling when it transferred to Broadway. Join us as we look at just a fraction of this amazing career that includes 27 adaptations and 7 original musicals and awards including 56 gold records, 23 platinum records, and a Grammy Award. Yes, all of the songs will be sung in German, but that’s half the fun!
