In anticipation of Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili’s appearance as part of our Music & Healing series (Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at 7:30PM), we invite you to read and reflect together on Hard by a Great Forest, a novel that echoes the political and emotional terrain at the heart of her event.
Set in the aftermath of war in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia—a country still grappling with the consequences of Russian occupation and aggression—Leo Vardiashvili’s debut novel explores the legacy of conflict through a deeply personal lens. When a father disappears after returning to his homeland, his sons embark on a journey that confronts the wreckage of history and the longing for home.
Join us for an evening of unparalleled artistry and musical mastery with the sensational Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by artistic director, trumpeter extraordinaire, and nine-time Grammy® Award-winner Wynton Marsalis as they perform the Duke in Africa program.
Duke Ellington found deep inspiration in Africa, travelling with his orchestra to Dakar, Senegal in 1966 to perform at the first World Festival of Negro Arts. This trip led him to compose several of his most iconic works including Afro-Bossa, Liberian Suite, and the Grammy® Award-winning Togo Brava Suite. Co-music-directed by JLCO saxophonists Chris Lewis and Alexa Tarantino, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis celebrates these compositions and the spirit of Duke's historic trip, nearly 60 years later.
For more than three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a leading advocate for jazz, culture, and arts education, dedicated to inspiring and growing jazz audiences worldwide. Under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has brought the art form of jazz from the heart of New York City to cities around the world.
From swinging rhythms to soulful melodies, every performance is a celebration of the spirit of jazz and its enduring influence. The Chicago Tribune describes the exhilarating force of the band in concert: “The orchestra [tore] through this music as if chasing the wind. Only a group of musicians who have toured together for so long…could have attained this kind of synchronicity.”

Presented as part of Chelsea’s initiative the American Mavericks Project (AMP), which is dedicated to piano music by Black American composers, she will premiere six new commissions for solo piano by esteemed composers Carolyn Yarnell, Adolphus Hailstork, Joyce Solomon Moorman, Anthony R. Green, Regina Harris Baiocchi and Jeremiah Evans, inspired by the poetry of Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Amiri Baraka, Naomi Long Madgett and Dudley Randall, who platformed these poets via his Detroit-based Broadside Press. Melba Joyce Boyd, Michigan’s Poet Laureate and Dudley Randall’s biographer, will recite the poems which inspired the commissioned works alongside Chelsea’s performances. "Quest" is dedicated to the memory of Nikki Giovanni.

GatherNYC presents Isabel Hage, a stand-up comedian and classically trained violist. As a stand-up, she has been featured on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon multiple times, and as a New Face of Comedy at the prestigious Just for Laughs festival in Montréal. Isabel started stand-up immediately after earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in viola performance from the Juilliard School. As a violist, she has played in the orchestra of many Broadway shows, and worked with artists such as Vampire Weekend, Bjork, Max Richter, and Steve Reich. You might be wondering if Isabel ever combines comedy and viola. The answer: sometimes!
GatherNYC is a revolutionary concert experience founded in 2018 by cellist Laura Metcalf and guitarist Rupert Boyd. The 2025-2026 season includes 31 concerts that run from October 2025 through May 2026, with concerts held every Sunday at 11am in The Theater at MAD.
Guests at GatherNYC are served exquisite live classical music performed by New York’s immensely talented artists, artisanal coffee and pastries, a taste of spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence.
