The Dress Circle: Remembering Sally Ann Howes

On December 19, 2021, the theatrical community lost a very special member, and on this week’s Dress Circle (10/9 7:00 p.m.), we’ll be celebrating her life. Sally Ann Howes was born in the London suburb of St. John’s Wood and started her professional acting career at the age of 13 in the film “Thursday’s Child.”

In this celebration of her career, we’ll be looking at her Broadway appearances in “Kwamina,” written for her by her then husband, Richard Adler, and “What Makes Sammy Run” in which she starred opposite Steve Lawrence.

From the London stage, Howes will be heard in an early appearance in the London production of “Paint Your Wagon” and “Summer Song” which was based on music by Antonin Dvorak, as well as a revival of Frank Loesser’s “Hans Andersen.”

In her final recording, she appeared as Miss Haversham on a concept/studio cast recording of a musical version of “Great Expectations.”

Perhaps her most iconic film role was as Truly Scrumptious in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” opposite Dick Van Dyke. We’ve scheduled two songs from the score including the one beloved by many, “Doll on a Music Box.”

If you don’t know her work, please tune in to see just why her career spanned six decades, and she was beloved by so many. You won’t be disappointed.
