The Dress Circle: Back to School with the Musicals

We almost missed it, but we’re heading back to school, vicariously of course, through the musicals on this week’s Dress Circle (8/24 7:00 p.m.). We’ve programmed thirteen songs from a dozen shows, many of which are new to our “Back to School” programs.

We really searched far afield this year to include songs about various aspects of school including lessons and learning, and we’ll even be taking a trip to college with the first song written by the then brand-new composing team of Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones.

Several of the songs come from musicals that will probably be new to you as they were in London and most didn’t transfer to New York. They include “The Buccaneer” by Sandy Wilson of “The Boy Friend” fame, and a musical version of the Fritz Lang silent film “Metropolis” which starred the wonderful Judy Kuhn.

We’ve also got songs from “Grease,” “Matilda,” “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” and “Henry, Sweet Henry,” a musical version of “The World of Henry Orient” by Bob Merrill.

It’s another hour of fun to celebrate what many parents feel is “The most wonderful time of the year.” Join us this Sunday!
