Welcome to March! Will it be windy? …rainy? …snowy? Well, on this week’s Dress Circle (3/1 7:00 p.m.), we know it’s going to be musical as we look at ten shows that opened in New York this month through their overtures and scene-setting opening numbers.
The oldest musicals is a very popular one that had it’s start in the 19th century but had one of its fourteen revivals in March of 1900.It’s “The Bohemian Girl” by Michael William Balfe and Alfred Bunn, and our overture comes from a studio cast recording made in 1968.
From there, we’ll jump 125 years to two musicals that are still going strong on Broadway: “The Buena Vista Social Club” and “Operation Mincemeat” for their scene-setting opening numbers.
As always, the remainder of the program will feature numbers from snows you’ll definitely know like “Carousel” and “Candide” (featuring the thirteen piece orchestra of the 1974 revival) as well as “Damn Yankees.” However, we’ve also included some pieces from lesser-known works like “Purlie” (…the fantastic opening number “Walk Him Up the Stairs), “On Your Toes,” and “Bring Back Birdie.”
Whether you’re familiar with the music or not, we can guarantee that it’s an enjoyable hour of wonderful performances, so we hope you’ll tune in.
