We’re staying at the Royal Opera House for this week’s Sunday Opera (8/17 3:00 p.m.) and a double bill of operas by Leonard Bernstein, his 1952 work “Trouble in Tahiti” and the sequel, “A Quiet Place,” written 31 years later in 1983. The story was initially based on the troubled relationship of Bernstein’s parents.

Thanks to John, a listener from Mercer County, we’re looking at a new theme for this week’s Dress Circle (8/10 7:00 p.m.) in a program we’ve titled “Duets for Her.” We’ve programed a baker’s dozen of duets for the ladies with some being sincere and others being sincerely snarky. (We prefer the snarky.)

The theme for this week’s Dress Circle (3/16 7:00 p.m.) came about as we were researching ideas for future programs. We noticed that almost all musicals feature songs where someone is leaving, telling someone else to leave, hinting someone else should leave, or is caught between leaving and staying. We came up with a list long enough to do several programs, so we thought we’d start this week with songs “Saying Goodbye or Not.”

Over the years, we’ve often said that pieces were some of our “favorites,” and we do have many. We tried to wrangle them into a manageable size, but we still had enough for several programs. With this in mind, this week’s Dress Circle (2/23 7:00 p.m.) will look at some of our favorite overtures and opening numbers because we had far fewer of those than we did individual songs.

Sadly, we won’t be hearing from any Quokkas on this week’s Dress Circle (12/29 7:00 p.m.) even if they are said to be the happiest animals on the planet, but what we will have is a program of “happy” songs to get you prepared for a Happy New Year.

Many of us are making our preparations for Thanksgiving, and since the day of family, friends, eating, parades, and football is coming fast upon us, this week’s Dress Circle (11/24 7:00 p.m.) will offer some “turkeys’ for the holiday. Those turkeys are musicals that didn’t run more than ten performances on Broadway, many through no fault of their own.

A Tempo this Saturday (12/23 at 7 pm) features conversations with musicians from some of the ensembles that performed as part of the newly released movie about Leonard Bernstein.

This program looks at five musicals for which Stephen Sondheim only contributed musicals including the three complete musicals: "West Side Story," "Gypsy," and "Do I Hear a Waltz?" and additional lyrics for "Candide" and "The Mad Show."

To celebrate Gifts from the Garden Month, we're turning to musicals for songs about gardens this week.

In three short months, we’ll be welcoming the year 2020, but on this week’s Dress Circle (9/1 7:00 p.m.) we’ll settle for welcoming September with…
