Over the years, we’ve often said that pieces were some of our “favorites,” and we do have many. We tried to wrangle them into a manageable size, but we still had enough for several programs. With this in mind, this week’s Dress Circle (2/23 7:00 p.m.) will look at some of our favorite overtures and opening numbers because we had far fewer of those than we did individual songs.
Why include opening numbers? That’s simply the fact that some musicals do not have overtures. They begin with an opening number that sets the scene or showcases a relevant aspect of the action to follow.
The opening numbers we’ve included come from “Blondel,” “70, Girls, 70,” “Seesaw,” and “The Book of Mormon.” (The last opener is also one of our earworms!)
Some of the other shows we have actual overtures from include “Mack and Mabel,” “Rags,” “Allegro,” “Follies” (Ted’s favorite), and “Candide.”
There are more, but once again, you’ll just have to tune in to hear what they are. We’re not being mean; we’re just enticing you to join us this Sunday for an hour of wonderfully escapist music and not a political note in the bunch.
