The Dress Circle: Overtures and Openings from the Shows of August

We actually heard several people say, “Can you believe it’s August already?”, and to be honest, we certainly can. As always, we’re starting off the month on this week’s Dress Circle (8/2 7:00 p.m.) with pieces from some of the shows that opened in New York this month, and we’re continuing with our look at them through overtures and opening numbers.

Our playlist, this time, covers 140 years of Broadway musicals from the original production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado” (one of 33 appearances of the show on Broadway) in 1885 through to our most recent opening, the touring company “revival” of “Mamma Mia” that played in 2025.

Some of the other “older” shows you’ll hear overtures from through some lovely modern recordings are Will Marion Cook’s “In Dahomey” and two credited to Jerome Kern “The Girl from Utah” and “Leave It to Jane.”

We’re rounding out the playlist with pieces from “1776,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” and “Stop the World I Want to Get Off.”

We hope you’ll join us this Sunday for another pleasant hour of diverse and enjoyable music.
