The Dress Circle: 8:00 p.m. Start! Recent and Current London Musicals

This week’s Dress Circle (6/10) will begin at 8:00 because of the length of the opera.  Join us as we take a trip to the West End as we look at five “Recent and Current London Musicals.”   We’ll be sampling songs from “Calendar Girls,” a moving musical based on the charming film of the same name and starring some British favorites such as Claire Moore and Joanna Riding.  A revival of “42nd Street” is currently appearing at Drury Lane, and the original cast included Sheena Easton as Dorothy Brock.

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke starred in a musical version of “The Bodyguard” which had a three-month national tour in the U.S. but didn’t make it to Broadway.  “Kinky Boots” is a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and we’ll hear selections from the live recording made at the Adelphi Theatre.  Our fifth musical is “Half a Sixpence” by David Heneker.  Unfortunately, the show was reworked with a new book by Julian Fellowes and new songs by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (of “Honk!” fame) with many of Heneker’s original songs changed as well.  Don’t forget to look for us on Facebook and at our website www.DCSRO.com.
