We hope you’re working towards enjoying your holiday weekend, and on this week’s Dress Circle (8/31 7:00 p.m.), we’re hoping to add to that enjoyment with “work” songs for Labor Day.
The first official celebration of Labor Day took place in New ork on September 5, 1882, but it wouldn’t become a national holiday until Grover Cleveland signed it into law on June 28, 1894. “The holiday recognizes the social and economic achievements of working people and was established after years of labor movements fighting for better conditions.” This fight has never really stopped.
The “work” songs we’ve programmed include physical work, allegorical work, mental work, and more.
Our musicals include several Disney films like “Snow White,” “Cinderella,” “Enchanted,” and “Monsters, Inc.”, but we’ve also included several British sources like “Moll Flanders” and the TV score for “The Darling Buds of May.”
Our composers and lyricists include George & Ira Gershwin, Jule Styne, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, Cole Porter, Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz, Cy Coleman, David Zippel, and many more.
Tune in this Sunday evening for the best kind of work (the kind that someone else is doing) as we celebrate Labor Day with work songs from musicals and more.
