The Dress Circle: Non-Love Love Songs for Valentine's Day

Once again, we’re getting ready for Valentine’s Day on this week’s Dress Circle (2/8 7:00 p.m.), and even if you don’t have a Valentine per se, you should really treat yourself by tuning in this week for “Non Love Love Songs” for the day that you make as special as you want.

These are “Non Love Love Songs” because they aren’t the usual “Moon – June – Spoon – I love you songs” one generally expects at this time. These, sometimes in a rather sneaky manner, hint or imply love and possible happy endings.

To that end, we’ll have songs like Sondheim’s “You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow / Love Will See Us Through” which point out how love will come with some forfeits to be paid for a happy ending.

We’ll hear the adaptation of a work by Grieg that showed up in the Wright and Forrest musical “The Song of Norway.“ Strange Music” points out how the performer suddenly hears the aforesaid strange music every time the other person comes near. This may be a manifestation of love, but it could be rather frightening as well.

There are a dozen more from composers and lyricists like Kern, Hammerstein, Arlen, Mercer, Porter, Reynolds, Udell, Geld, and Rodgers. Those musicals include “Do I Hear a Waltz?”, High Wide and Handsome,” “Shenandoah,” “Centennial Summer,” “Napoleon,” and more.

They’re still love songs, and they’re still wonderful and we hope that they’ll make for another happy hour of listening.
