July 26 is National Aunt and Uncle Day! Who knew? We found out before it was too late, so this week’s Dress Circle (7/26 7:00 p.m.), we’re going to be celebrating some aunts and uncles through stage and screen musicals along with at least two television series. Since there were actually so few songs dedicated to aunts and uncles, we’ve gone far afield and found some interesting and forgotten/rare pieces.
Our aunts (and they really are under-represented in musicals) will be found in pieces from “Gigi,” “Oh, Coward!”, “The Human Comedy,” and “Treemonisha.”
The uncles go further afield with songs from “The King and I,” “Little Mary Sunshine,” “Roadside,” and three songs about “Uncle Sammy” from “The Fleet’s In,” “Sugar Babies,” and “Red Head.”
Those of an age will have a bit of a nostalgia trip with Annette Funicello and the Beach Boys singing about “The Monkey’s Uncle” and Peter Tork of Monkees fame singing about “Your Auntie Grizelda.” We’ve even thrown in a bit of the wonderful Vic Mizzy and a piece from his score for the television hit “The Addams Family.”
Join us this Sunday to celebrate some aunts, uncles, and just great music.
